Among the most popular topics for radio talk shows are politics, religion, culture, entertainment and show business, economy, sports, social issues, and environment.

This radio format is usually hosted by a single person but sometimes today there are a co-host or guests in the program, especially if the topic to be discussed is a very hot issue or very interesting one. The show could either be: free-format, wherein the host talks on air about the issue at hand; discussion format, wherein distinguished guests are invited; or interview type, wherein the host interviews a particular resource person for the topic to tackle. There are also times that listeners’ participations are needed where live conversation of the host and the listener who calls-in can be broadcasted in the air.

Ever since Barry Gray introduced the listener call-in in 1945, the popularity of Talk radio never ceased to leave the airwaves. This gained him the title “The hot mama of Talk Radio” during that era. However, the very first talk radio broadcast was really credited to Aimee Semple McPherson, who purchased her own radio station and began broadcasting in 1920’s.

Since then, radio talk show is everywhere. Every state has its own radio station airing radio talk shows, may it be AM or FM broadcasting. It does not matter as long as there is a juicy topic or issue or sometimes, gossips to talk about. As long as there are commercial breaks in every segment of the show, as every producer knows that commercials and listener ratings are the one that feeds the shows, then the show must always go on.

There have been a lot of variations in today’s radio talk shows. These are now categorized as conservative talk, hot talk, sport talk, and progressive talk. The latest and the most popular now is the internet-based talk radio show.

Conservative talk mainly covers the issues on political, religious, and ethical beliefs. Topics that are taboo and too conservative to talk about are being aired in free time in the United States as its popularity began in late 1990’s. The audiences of these talk shows are mostly adult males in middle-ages that are conservatives. A 2004 survey shows that 17% of the public are listening to this kind of programming. It also shows that 41% are Republican and 28% are Democrats. Moreover, 45% described themselves as conservatives while 18% as liberals.

Hot talk, on the other hand, is sometimes called the FM talk or the shock talk that targets male audiences whose ages range from 18 to 49. Common subject for this is about pop culture and current issues on culture. The Arts are mostly aired in the FM station rather than in the AM.

As the name speaks for itself, sports talk is a radio talk show that discusses about the buzz in the sporting arena. Host may invite guests, sportscasters, players, coaches, or fans to talk about the latest event in the NBA, PGA Tour, in the World Cup and World Series, and above all, the Olympics. The discussion may range from a simple interview or interaction between players inside the box and a listening fan. Mostly, the target audience for these are the sport enthusiast people, be it a man or a woman.

Progressive talk is a radio talk show format that is based on the expression of progressive or liberal opinions of the host as well as the listeners. This program is implemented in the US since 2004. Some familiar shows are the Stephanie Miller Show and the Air America Radio which is both aired in the AM radio.

Lastly, the advancement of technology brought to life the internet-based radio talk show. It is sometimes called as web casting. This is because it is just an audio broadcasting service transmitted through the internet. This is now effectively used by broadcasters because it is cost effective and its audience coverage is very wide.

The listening audiences of any radio talk show have all the control of their judgment. Whatever they hear from the radio, it is their sole responsibility, whether or not to believe in it.

Most people who spend most of their time watching these various shows find satisfaction and entertainment in them for each of the programs they watched may be one of the many interests and hobbies they have like those people who are engaged in sports, one can expect that the channel they mostly turn to would be certain sports channel. Some are interested in various talk shows where they get a vast number of information on whatever is going on around us or some personal issues which one can relate to. People tend to patronize these television shows not only because of the certain discussions being made but even on the different footages being shown. Some may even get amused or overwhelmed with the opinions and statements made not only by the guests but as well as the audience. However, not all of these television shows are actually aired to live in the air unlike those radio talk shows we hear on air. Some people prefer these programs than the ones they see on TV.

Radio talk shows are usually aired on air. These may be similar to the television talk shows we see being aired on TV. Like television talks shows, radio talk shows sometimes invite some people like celebrity personalities, politicians, or people with adequate knowledge on the topics being discussed on air. The participants share their point of views, ideas and reactions and may sometimes argue while the discussions made. One of the reasons why most of these programs are aired live is to allow theirs radio listeners to impart their views, provide feedbacks and even make suggestions by calling on the telephone, via email messaging or SMS messaging. The participation of the audience in the discussion even expands the topic to many other related issues. There are times where some topics are extended up to the next airing time tackling many other issues, especially when a lot of feedbacks are being received from the radio listeners.

Since the way of communication to their patrons is through listening, topics or discussions made in radio talk shows are often related to the current issues many people are facing, politics and some issues under the present administration of a political leader, current news happenings and event and other topics, which can be easily explained without any further visual demonstrations or presentations.

Because radio talk shows are aired live, there are instances where the opinions expressed by participants are not filtered for the usage of foul languages or stating the name of some company, organization, person and other things when accusing. Incidents like these sometimes put the radio program into some controversies and conflict with some people. There are also times that certain discussions form into huge arguments between the participants due to conflicting views and opinions or sometimes, harsh reactions and degrading feedbacks either from any of the participants or the audience who called in order to join the discussion.

Sometimes, even the radio hosts make these mistakes with their effort in elaborating their points of view. They tend to use foul words in order to express how much they felt dismayed or disgusted. These people rely only on the power of their oral communications to get their message across because their listeners can only listen to the words they say and the radio hosts may need to elaborate something further in order to misunderstand on the part of the radio listeners. It cannot also be denied that there are some audience reactions, which are redundant sometimes.

Whether one prefers the television talk show where they can see the guests expressing their thoughts and reactions or the radio talk show, these shows provide information to the public, and it also shows the freedom of every individual to speak out to the public. Even though one is free to speak out one’s reactions and ideas, one has to remember that every opinion one offer may create an impact to a few people listening.

We also have newspaper and magazines. Updates over the radio are one of the oldest ways of talking and discussing issues. Talk radio is a style in which a particular topic is being discussed with listeners participating.

Talk radio is hosted by a single person; this introduces interviews with an open opinion from different guests. Listener participation is the main aspect in talk radios. This is usually done through broadcasting live conversations from listeners who call in over the phone and talk to the host depending on the issue of opinion. These listener participants are being weeded out by radio staff on the percentage of audience impact basing on the level of interest. Some opinions from listeners serve as an attraction to the advertisers who are very much interested in the topic being discussed. The show in a talk radio is divided into fragments. To make the show more interesting and entertaining, they need to shell out advertisements; music is also used on some shows, particularly in public or non-commercial radio. Usual topics being discussed on talk radio are hot talk, conservative talk, progressive talk, politics, sports talk or even liberal talk. During early of the year 2005, talk radio can be downloaded over the internet at an affordable price. Even without investing a capital, it is possible to produce a series of internet-based-talk-radio.

Talk radio is not focused to the AM band station alone. Public Radio also advertises talk programs. They also feature discussions and listeners do call in for an opinion related on the issue. In United States, according to Arbitron, top-rated, conservative and less-political commentators include Bruce Williams, Luis de la Garza and Laura Schlessinger.

Since the origin of talk radio, one of the favorite opinions on air is politics. In the mid-1940s, tandem for listener-participation started in talk radio. The Untied States recognize the fast growth of in the famous popularity field in talk radio. According to research, by year 2004, 17% of public listen to talk radio. Most audience is male, conservative and middle-aged. Regular listeners to talk radio is Republican having 41% and Democrats having 28%. 45% of listeners confirm that they are conservative listeners and 18% claim that they are liberated listeners.

Talk Radio in United Kingdom is also common. Most Talk radios in United Kingdom include BBC Radio 4 (speech and entertainment programming), BBC 7, talk sport and BBC Radio Live Five (talk/sport station).Bloomberg is considered as one of the specialized talk services in United Kingdom; a station that broadcasts financial issues and open stories and plays – but was closed in the year 2008.

Two biggest popular talk radio networks in Canada are published in Canadian Broadcast Corporation’s English Language CBC RadioOne and French language Premiere Chaine. Both network moves during morning and afternoon programs. They air commercial free program of their own local agenda.

In Australia, talkback radio is known as their talk radio. Historically, Sydney’s 2UE is the most famous talk radio, in which programs by John Laws Morning show were organized widely across the country. Talkback radios in Australia have been a room for politics open forum and functions.

Up to our generation now, talk radios are still on top of media communications. It has been one of the influenced means of sharing information – may it be an opinionated idea, argument on a particular issue or a news item to broadcast over the radio. It has also been a tradition that listeners will voice in over the telephone and give their thoughts and ideas to the talked subject. This is the trademark as to why talk radio has been improved over years and make it an update to view the better way of improving its quality and productivity. During the early use of talk radio, only one host games the show but as the new technology takes in place – we can manage two to three hosts to run the show and take turns in operating the said program.

Awards and recognition were paid back to the line of business in talk radio. It has been a convention to recognize and reward the people behind the success of talk radio.

It contains topics and discussions with regards to issues that are about politics, romance, comedy, sports and pretty much anything that gives concern to the society. It provides emphasis on the participation of the listeners on the issues being discussed. It is hosted by a talk radio host and sometimes features a guest or a group of guests to add spice into the show. Participation of the listeners is usually done through live broadcast conversations using the telephone as the medium of communication between the listener calling and the talk radio host. Most of the time, the show is formatted into program segments separated by commercials, advertisements, and music. There are various types of talk radio and each type caters for a different field of topic and caters for a specific group of listeners. Talk radio has indeed provided another alternative medium of self-expression and promotes the right of freedom of speech. It provides yet another form of entertainment for the listeners from different parts of the world. Each country has its own distinct flavor in terms of social issues and areas of concern, not to mention the differences of their respective native tongues, thereby making talk radio unique among every country. So, why did talk radio gain so much popularity over the years? With today’s technology and the presence of the internet, how did talk radio manage to keep up with the pace of modernization? And lastly, what is the effect of the emergence of talk radio to the listeners of the show? As the discussion progresses, these questions will soon be addressed.

Talk radio has gained popularity up until today’s generation. It discusses a broad range of topics reflecting the society’s current situation. Talk radio oriented by political issues talks pretty much all about the science of politics. It talks about the different individuals running for the different positions in the government. To make things a lot more interesting, the actual individuals running in the elections may actually be the ones that will guests in the show and listeners get a chance to ask the aspiring politicians about issues concerning their administration and about their platform of governance. The persons running for a government office will then undergo intense scrutiny by the public as represented by the listeners of the talk radio show. The talk radio host may create some sort of debate between the guests of the show to spice up the discussion and to let the thousands of listeners of the show to be the judge in terms of their respective bets for the coming elections.

Sports-oriented talk radio discusses about the different sports icons of the different fields of sports including boxing, basketball, football, hockey, and many more. It also discusses about the rising superstars of sports, and the highest paid stars of the game. It is, an all exclusive access to the world of sports and sports enthusiasts from different places could participate in the discussion and give their points of view with the topic at hand. What is great about this is that a certain group of people of similar interests could engage in an activity wherein they could interact with each other and present their respective opinions live on air. They could talk about the latest controversial fight in boxing and just share their beliefs about which boxer had the upper hand and deserved to win the match. All things with regards to sports are all tackled under sports-oriented talk radio.

Talk radio has gained so much popularity primarily because of the element of listener participation. It gives the listener a chance to get involved with the discussion that is why this program is still patronized by many listeners. The birth of internet-based talk radio has made it possible for talk radio to keep up with the pace of modernization and innovation. It somehow evolved from just a plain radio show. Its emergence certainly had a big impact to the listeners of the show and to the society. It gave the public an opportunity to interact and be part of the discussion. It provides them the chance to give their opinions and share their experiences on air along with the other listeners of the program thereby creating an environment characterized by freedom of speech and freedom of expression.

It was commonly called as the electric and magnetism theory. There were several scientists working on the radio project. That is why radio was successfully created and progressed up to these days. Throughout the years radio was used in different purposes. It was commonly used as a tool for communication and entertainment. Not many years later radio programs began. It composed of a news program and an entertainment program like playing music on air. At these time radio talks also started. It is done by one or more character discussing a certain topic live on the radio. It may be a debate or simply just a normal conversation.

Did you already try to speak on air? You may find it easier than live on stage. This is because you cannot see the people you are talking to. Were you nervous at the time you were talking on air? Most individual who is a beginner will surely be nervous because they were not yet used to it. Talking on air really requires a lot of thinking, and you need to be confident at the same time… It is a skill that needs to be developed. It would be a shame on your part if you are talking on air and giving false information. If you keep on giving wrong details your listener will not trust you anymore some of them would even degrade you. Always remember that you have to know what you are talking about. Never pretend that you know a certain topic. Some may not be nervous when talking on air because they don’t see the people listening to them. It is just like talking to no one. You just don’t know how many people are listening to you. Always put in mind that there is no age limit when listening to a radio. Young children may be listening in your program. In this case, you must avoid speaking bad words and violent phrases. When you are talking on air you are just like talking to the whole people. As information heard by one it will be shared to other individuals. That’s why you really have to watch out for your words.

Now a day radio is used beyond its expected purpose. Some speakers would use radio to destroy a person’s view. All the words you said on air cannot be totally retrieved back. Did you get it means? Just like, for example, a person discussing a topic on air where thousands of people are listening. What if that person will say “I have HIV” it is obvious that majority of his listener will believe on what he said. Even if he will grab that idea back from his listeners head like stating that it was just a joke only few of his listener will surely believe that he was just joking. This will really happen to you, especially if you are in a trusted radio channel. Remember to be careful on the details you throw on air, just relax and don’t be overconfident, and finally never ever pretend live on air.

A single host has been hosted with this feature wherein he has to interview different guests in one time. Since talk radio is a conversational and interactive feature, the listeners get the chance to voice out their view regarding the battled out issue via “call in” or “telephone call” towards the show host. For the sake of breaking no rules and not going beyond the limit, the views and opinions of the screened listeners by the talk radio staff as to make best use of audience interest. Usual talks are conservative talk, hot talk, progressive talk and sports talk.

Though in the present, talk radio has used the advantage of technology by airing it in an internet-based.

Radio listening was an inactive exercise among American people centuries ago. However, the daily approach towards talk radio was never the same after Barry Gray, an influential American influential radio personality best that known as the “father of talk radio”, established a feature letting listeners hold conversations with the host around 1950s.

The talk radios started when out of Gray’s boredom, while working as a disc jockey for New York’s WMCA in 1945, he initiatively picked up the telephone receiver up to his microphone as he shares his conversation with his listening audience. Woody Herman, a very popular celebrity bandleader that day, was incidentally the first caller which eventually invited more people to listen. The spontaneous act by Gray boomed the interest of the listeners and the station’s staff which gave way to the birth of talk radio format. From then on, Gray continuously did acceptance of call-ins in his radio program.

After the unstoppable success of WMCA’s talk radio format, rivals of the show found the significance of such format, which eventually was followed. This started the unceasing extension and spread-wide awareness of talk radio to the world.

Another man who had left a great mark on talk radio was Long John Nebel. He was a prominent all-night radio host having millions of regular listeners every air time of his show, which talked about off-topics such as anomalous events, UFOs and other offbeat topics.

Long John Nebel is the disc jockey of WOR. On the year of television’s emergence, radio programs faced big challenge as its ratings made a whooping decrease. In 1954, Nebel proposed to start a discussion about out of the ordinary topics and unexplainable things which eventually had been an advantage to the program. Despite the usual poorly rated time slot given to Nebel from midnight to dawn, the show managed to get a remarkable increase in ratings. Topics that have been discussed were all about UFOs, voodoo, witchcraft, hypnotism, conspiracy theories, ghosts and the like.

These would be the reasons where Nebel received good attention throughout the US nation. It came from his abrasive style in an interview as he is described sympathetic and compassionate host despite his aggressive attitude on the phone.

In a talk radio program, it is inevitable that brusque thought of smart people may clash taking to ignorance their control to speak a foul language. Having realized the obscenity that talk radio conversation might bring in the national airwaves, seven-second delay device was invented. In 1965, an engineer named Russell Tinklepaugh invented this kind of system. Ampex 300 tape deck was modified with an increased set of heads. It had then the ability to record a conversation. This produced a delay of several seconds in radios than the live show. When foul language is committed, the staff of the radio program had enough time to hit the stop button that no radio listener could hear an airing of unclean words.
